These days every where we go we are bombarded with scent (fragrance) and some can be very overpowering that we almost have to make a quick dash through the fragrance department or hold our breath on a elevator. All of this scent can bring one to sneeze or feel a headache coming on. It comes as no surprise that many yoga, massage, dentist and doctors offices ask that ladies refrain from the use of fragrance. There have even been recommendations of pregnant women to discontinue use of wearing artificial fragrance. Why so many sensitivities to fragrance?

Our skin the largest organ on our body absorbs on average over 60% into the blood stream. Most fragrance is made up of 95% chemicals that of which are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum and natural has, known as petrochemicals. On average 80% of fragrance formulations are comprised of these chemicals and in some cases 100% of a formula can be synthetic.

With the skin absorbing these chemicals either by direct, contact or exposure to air containing fragrance they can trigger many allergic reactions, migraines, asthma attacks, nausea, eczema and other sensitivities.

Why synthetics? Many artificial fragrance do contain natural, essential oils but typically it is a small percentage. Naturals are very expensive and rare vs. synthetics, there are certain notes that you just can't extract from nature. Man made fragrances also have stronger staying power than naturals due to the chemical preservatives, it helps to release the scent slowly over time, meaning many hours of long wear.

Natural fragrance are essential oils and isolates derived from botanical ingredients that are harvested from the earth for example: flowers, fruits, sap, seeds or the skin of the plant as well bark, leaves, roots, resins or wood of certain trees and not from a lab (synthetic).

These oils are derived from natural raw material by either steam or water distillation. Unlike synthetics where the fragrance stays the same for hours, natural fragrance gently evolve and last around 2 or more hours, depending on how dry or oily your skin. Each individual's skin is different so the longevity and the spirit of the notes smell and last differently. Natural perfumes, unlike synthetics, are not overpowering and will stay within a few feet of your body. Basically, when you leave the room, so will your fragrance. Many people with chemical sensitivities and asthma will not be as bothered like they are with synthetics.
